MA/D is a limited liability company registered in the State of New York. MA/D is an interdisciplinary office producing modern residential and commercial architecture, high profile retail as well as significant product and furniture design. We strive for intelligent and effective organization and precise detailing. Our work is a research into clarity of construction, with investigations of light, proportion and materials, utilizing a collaborative network of clients and design professionals. This process brings specificity to the elaborate and poetry to the mundane. We embrace emerging technologies, yet remain grounded by an appreciation of architectural history and knowledge of both existing and developing methods of construction, research, and form making, which are fundamental to our flexible approach and execution of processes, techniques, language and thus projects.
We work closely and in collaboration with our clients nationally and internationally to include Europe, Middle East and Asia. Locally in NYC, MA/D provides consultation with the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, NYC City Planning, NYC Board of Standards and Appeals and provides documents for filing with the NYC Department of Buildings.
Our firm also offers clients a full spectrum of services as a consultant for real estate development, offering access to mortgage financing, architectural and design as well as construction related services. We handle all aspects of project management from start to finish working simultaneously with General Contractors and subs-contractors, associate architects, engineers and local government agencies to ensure successful project completion. MA/D offers property and/or land owners' new innovative approaches geared to construct high quality building projects in order to maximizing return on investment. MA/D team brings together years of experience in real estate finance, small and large scale construction projects, branding, design and manufacturing expertise.
Thomas McKay AIA
Born in Boston 1961. He received his BFA/ B.A. degree at Rhode Island School of Design in 1984 and a Masters Degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in1993. In the period from 1987-1993 he worked with Antonio Citterio and Partners in Milano. With Citterio he completed commercial projects in Europe and Japan including the Centro Commerciale for Seregno, Italy. In 1994 together with Kimberly Sheppard and Charles Mallea he formed MSM Architects based in New York. As a Principal of MSM he worked extensively with and designed for European, Asian, and South American companies, designers, and fabricators realizing commercial, corporate office, and residential projects throughout the US. During this period he also led a design team to win First Place in the New Public Space Competition for a three-block redevelopment in downtown Buffalo. In January 2003 he formed MA/D McKay architecture/design to further develop his research in architecture, interior and product design. His list of past clients includes IDEO, Arman Arman, Ian Schrager Co., USM modular furniture, Hugo Boss. McKay has been a professor in the Product Design Department at Parsons School of Design since 1999 and he has lectured on MA/D's projects and design approach at the Parsons the New School for Design, to private companies and the Retail Design Institute. He is presently working internationally on development, architecture, interior and product design projects.
